I think it’s funny that people don’t realize animals can be extremely intelligent and cunning.
Jane Goodall once wrote about a pair of chimps she had observed, Beethoven and Dilly. Dilly was an orphan, so Beethoven kind of adopted her. He protected her and shared most food with her, but not when it came to the bananas that Goodall handed out to habituate the chimps to humans. Beethoven never let Dilly have one. One day when Beethoven wasn’t looking, she showed Dilly a banana. Chimps usually make a food cry when they spot a prized treat, but Dilly kept quiet. She went on grooming Beethoven and made cooing sounds at him until he fell asleep. Then she ran over, ate the banana in three bites, and went went straight back to grooming as if nothing had happened.
It’s not just primates, either. In many species of bird, if they see another individual watching them hide seeds, they’ll pretend to carry on and then return later to move them. Studies show that even if that was a frequent seed-hiding spot for them, they’ll rarely return to it after they’ve been spied on. Animals aren’t stupid, and they can even be pretty deceptive at times.
